Sundakkai pachadi is another wonderful medicinal yet delicious recipe from chettinad. It has very unique flavour and taste as the vegetable which is little sour and slightly bitter, adding tamrind to the recipe takes away the bitterness and enhance the taste of the recipe. This is one other recipe which can be considered as replacement to the usual sambar, rasam, kuzhambu and goes very well with rice.






Sundakkai or turkey berry is rich in iron and calcium, you will be amazed to know the helath benefits of this small fruit.It has the potential to kill the germs and also acts as a medicine for cold. It helps in problems related to the chest and stomach, it prevents gas trouble, cure paralysis, control diabetes, strengthen bones and taking Turkey Berry regularly will help in strengthening the nerves.


Sundakkai Pachadi | Turkey Berry Dal Gravy

Prep Time:  20 minutes   |  Cook time: 20 minutes    |  Serves: 4

TURKEY BERRY – 200 GRMS
ONION – 2 NOS
TOMATO – 2 – 3 NOS
TOOR DAL – 1/3 CUP
CORIANDER LEAVES – FEW
RED CHILL POWDER – ½ TSP
CORIANDER POWDER – 1 TSP
TURMERIC POWDER – ¼ TSP
SALT – TO TASTE

TEMPERING

OIL – 1 TBSP
MUSTARD – ½ TSP
URAD DAL – ¼ TSP
FENUGREEK SEEDS – ½ TSP
ASAFOEDITA – 1/8 TSP
RED CHILLI – 1 NO
         

METHOD OF PREPARATION:

1. Finely chop onions and tomato, remove the stem of turkey berry and divide it into quarters and add it to a bowl of water otherwise it will turn black in color

2. Take cooker heat oil, in hot oil add tempering, then add toor dal and mix it till the oil glaze spread over the dal

3. Now add onions and saute it till translucent, then add tomato and mix it till color changes not mushy

4. Then add turkey berry saute it for 5 minutes then add turmeric powder, salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder and mix it, after 30 seconds then add water




 I have used 1 tblspn sambar powder instead of red chilli powder and coriander powder

5. Once it start boiling then close it with pressure cooker lid and cook it for 4 whistles.

6. See to that turkery berry cooked and dal becomes mashy. Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve it hot with rice, along with Kulambu, rasam and also good side dish for chappathi
