Kadappa is a traditional dish made in kumbakonam and tanjore. It is a watery side dish similar to stew. This recipe might resemble kurma as whole spices are added to it. Adding carrot and tomato to this dish is totally your choice. This goes very well with idli and dosa. Every restaurant in kumbakonam and other areas of Tanjore district serves this yummy dish for the breakfast, its rarely seen in other parts of tamil nadu.

POTATOES – 2 NOS
MOONG DAL – ¼ CUP

TOMATO – 1 NO

CORIANDER LEAVES – FEW
LEMON JUICE – 1TSPN
TO GRIND
FRIED GRAM – 1 TBLSPN
GREEN CHILLI – 2

GRATED COCONUT – ¼ CUP
FENNEL SEEDS – 1 TSPN
CUMIN SEEDS – 1 TSPN
GINGER – 1 INCH
GARLIC – 4 NOS
TEMPERING
COOKING OIL – 2

MUSTARD SEEDS – ½
TSPN
CLOVES – 4 NOS
CARDOMOM – 2 NOS
BAY LEAF – 2 NOS

METHOD
OF PREPARATION:
1.
Cook the Moong dal and washed potatoes along with turmeric powder in pressure cooker with 2 cups of water for 3 whistles.
2. Take a pan add oil and fry slitted green chilli once it starts spluttering add
fried gram and saute it for few seconds and switch off the flame. Allow this to cool

Now grind the given ingredients along with peeled ginger and fried green chilli and roasted gram (drain it from oil) into mixie jar and grind it as a fine paste
Finely chop onions and tomatoes.Peel and chop potatoes as cubes. Take the cooked dal separately and mash it.
4. Take a deep pan transfer the remaining oil, once oil is hot add ingredients given for tempering, then
add onions saute it till it turns to translucent, then add tomato and saute it till tomatoes become mushy.
5.Now add the grounded paste,salt and 1 cup of water and mix it well
6.Cook it till the raw flavor is gone then add potatoes
7.Then add cooked dal and add water to it if required. Cook it in low flame by closing it with a lid.
8.Once it is started boiling switch off the flame and then add lemon juice and mix it

Transfer it to a serving dish and serve it hot with idly, dosa and idiyappam
